Extreme Heat and your Poultry do not go well together. We have lost some chooks in the recent extreme heat. So we had to learn how to cope with excessive heat and keep our chooks alive.
1.The easiest answer was to hose them down every couple of hours. If you only have a couple you can dunk them in a bucket of cold water. We water the trees and all their surrounds at the same time to try and cool down their environment.
2. Another idea is to put bricks of ice in their water. I make it out of Tupperware boxes but used chinses take away plastic boxes are just as good. Make this ice the night before you expect an extreme heat event.
3. Frozen grapes and watermelon are a favourite with our chooks at any time but especially so on a stinking hot day. Just give them a portion of frozen grapes and a slice of watermelon to suit the size of your group of chickens.
4. Always make sure they have access to shade and cool drinking water. you may have to change their water a few times a day when the temperature is over 40 degrees celsius.
5. A mist spray system set up on a timer on the hose is the next solution we are going to try as we get heat exhaustion looking after the chooks. We are going to wind it around their trees and aling their fences to try and cool down their environment.
If you have any tried and tested ways to keep your poultry cool and alive in extreme heat please add to this blog for all to see.
