We had 15 hatch out of 15 fertile eggs. We thought all was going well with the chicks until yesterday. One chick was dead in the brooder then today another one was dead and a third one looks lacklustre. Not sure what's doing it but I bet the cold nights have something to do with it. We are trying to replace our cardboard brooder box with a clean one in case that is an issue.
Meanwhile the second group of chicks has started to hatch out. Four little chicks are out so far. We have decided to leave them in the incubator overnight in order to let the older group have an extra night in the house under airconditioning. The heat lamp up in the shed is double the capacity of the one in the house and we drape their playpen in old towels to cut down the draughts. That can wait until tomorrow.
