The chicks have started to hatch. Shown here are the first 5 in their brooder box. I use a recycled lawn mower box from a hardware store for their brooder box. When it gets too dirty I go and get another one. The lamp is a heat only lamp as I found with a light emitting heat lamp the chicks don't sleep well at night. I got this lamp from Bell South. I use recycled newspaper covered in office paper shreddings for their bedding. I put this on the compost heap when I change their bedding as it is rich in manure. For the first 24 - 36 hours they mostly sleep and do not need any food or water as they live off the egg yolk that they reabsorb just before hatching out. I will give them chick starter food and a water container tonight.
